About Essence of Silk
Essence of Silk is an educational silk archive dedicated to the art, science, and story of silk.
Created from years of silk knowledge, original photography, textile documentation, and hands-on experience, Essence of Silk was developed as a resource for readers who want to understand silk beyond its surface beauty.
Our Silk Foundation
SILKPRADA was established in 2000 with a deep focus on silk fabrics, silk bedding, silk accessories, and refined silk craftsmanship.
Through years of working with silk, studying silk fabrications, sourcing materials, documenting textile processes, and observing how silk behaves in real use, a broader silk knowledge archive began to take shape.
Essence of Silk was created to organize and share that knowledge.
A Silk Legacy Built Through Firsthand Experience
Essence of Silk is not built from theory alone. It is shaped by more than 26 years of silk work, study, sourcing, documentation, and firsthand observation.
This archive reflects years of time, travel, investment, and dedication to understanding silk at its source. From silk fabrics and bedding to cocoon studies, yarn and weaving documentation, manufacturer visits, textile experiments, and future couture studies, Essence of Silk preserves the knowledge gained through seeing silk production with our own eyes.
The purpose of Essence of Silk is not simply sales, promotion, or the showcasing of beautiful photographs. It is a long-term silk legacy: a place to preserve hard-earned knowledge, original documentation, and the material stories behind silk.
Why Essence of Silk Exists
Silk is often described too simply. Many people know silk as a beautiful natural fiber, but fewer understand how different silk fabrications behave, why momme matters, how cocoons become yarn, how weaving affects texture, or why one silk may be suitable for bedding while another is better for couture, interiors, accessories, or archival study.
Essence of Silk exists to make these differences clearer.
This website is being developed as a place to explore:
The 38 Silk Fabrications
One of the foundations of Essence of Silk is the study of 38 silk fabrications.
Each fabrication is treated as a complete textile identity, shaped by fiber, yarn, weave, weight, finish, texture, drape, sheen, behavior, and use.
Essence of Silk uses the word “fabrication” because silk is not defined by weave structure alone. A silk fabrication includes the full experience of the material: how it is made, how it moves, how it feels, how it reflects light, how it responds to care, and how it performs in design.
Original Photography and Documentation
Essence of Silk is built with original photography and first-hand documentation whenever possible.
The archive includes silk fabric images, cocoon studies, yarn and weaving documentation, manufacturer-visit photographs, silk experiment images, couture study images, and other visual materials created to support silk education.
These images are not decorative fillers. They are part of the educational purpose of Essence of Silk.
A Resource for Learning
Essence of Silk is created for readers who want to learn more about silk, including students, designers, textile researchers, couture makers, interior designers, silk enthusiasts, and anyone curious about how silk becomes fabric.
The goal is to make silk knowledge more accessible, more precise, and more visually understandable.
As the archive grows, Essence of Silk will continue to add new pages, original images, silk fabrication studies, care resources, and couture demonstrations.
